The role of TFEC in reptilian coloration

February 27th, 2024

Athanasia Tzika presents novel histological analyses revealing strong differences in chromatophore-related phenotypes in TFEC mutants of the ball python versus the anole lizard. These new results are cautioning against broad generalizations from one species to another. Athanasia then outlines possible differences in the respective roles of the MiT/TFE gene family in the differentiation of the three chromatophore types (from neural crest precursor cells) in different vertebrate lineages. Additional gene-editing experiments would allow for a much better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the diversity of colours and patterns in reptiles.
